Removing A Tick From Your Pet

For some of us, the fall season is a favorite. It's not too hot, the air is crisp, fall foliage peaks and it's all about the apples and pumpkins.  For pet parents, it's also an ideal time for lots of outdoor play, walks and hikes.  You don't have to worry about inclement weather conditions, extreme heat and hot pavement.

There is one thing, however, you need to be on high alert about...ticks.  Huh?  The spring and summer is behind us...and that's tick season, right?

A Little Inspiration...

There are hundreds of memes posted of all things pets from downright hysterical to ones that tug at the heartstrings. We post a lot of them on our K9 1-ON-1 Facebook page. The newest trend appears to be dog shaming.  Don't be fooled...there is no shame.  These "confessions" are good for a few laughs and amplifies the proof that dogs have their own unique personalities. Like 2 legged kids, dogs can get into mischief and have their feisty moments.

You've whipped up a batch of your favorite guacamole and paired it up with some sliced vegetables. After settling on the sofa and turning on your favorite TV show, you loaded up a carrot stick with guac. Just as you're about to open your mouth...

Wait for it...

Homemade Dog Treats Made With Fresh Apples

It's the fall season and you know what that means.  Apples. Apples. Apples. The orchards are opened and people are flocking in with gusto to pick these tasty gems from the trees. It's definitely a beloved tradition for many folks.

Aside from sinking our teeth into this crisp, sweet fruit, it's a staple for baking this time of year. From apple crisp to German apple cake, the ovens are on and fresh baked goods are popping out left and right.

The Power Of A Dog's Nose & Intuition

Every once in a while we'll stumble on an article of a heroic dog who "sniffs out" a health ailment of their beloved human.  It may be in the form of unusual behavior, nosing a specific area of their human's body, nudging, etc.

A good rule of thumb is to never doubt a dog's sniffer or intuition. They smell odors that the human nose can't detect and dogs have a tendency to sense things before we do.  Ever wonder why your furbaby will pace and act out of sorts a couple of hours before a thunderstorm hits or any other extreme weather?  They just know. If something is wrong or isn't quite right, your furbaby will let you know.

Get Creative With DIY Dog Beds

Shopping around for a dog bed can be quite overwhelming. There are hundreds of styles available from your basic run of the mill to luxury dog beds that will put your own bed to shame.

We all want to spoil our pooch, but some of these beds are ridiculously priced.  For a general purpose bed that resembles a large plush pillow, you could fork out anywhere from $20 to $40.

More and more dog owners are embracing the idea of DIY dog beds and, I must say, the ones we've seen are worlds better than the one in stores.  Best of all, these DIY dog beds can be made for a tiny fraction of the cost as the ones seen in stores.

You Say I'm Spoiled Like It's A Bad Thing...

Earlier today I checked in on our furbaby. He was sleeping soundly on our bed curled up on 2 pillows.  On top of the pillows was one of his three favorite blankets. The second favorite blanket was curled around his head for a pillow.  The third blanket was on top of him. I placed a few of his favorite treats about a foot from where he was sleeping.  You know, just in case he woke up and wanted a snack.

Aside from his 3 favorite plush blankets, he has a large dog bed in the living room. Beside the bed is a large, round wicker basket filled with toys and bones. The floor is scattered with various dog bones, a few of my fluffy socks and half eaten dog biscuits. In each room there are a few scattered toys and treats. When you walk into our house, there is no question we have a dog.

Can Dogs Suffer From Allergies?

This morning I woke up and it felt as if I had swallowed a mouthful of sand.  Yesterday, I was plagued with itchy & watery eyes.  It's fall allergy season and this year it's hitting people hard.

I've also heard various concerns from dog owners who are noticing their furbaby scratching more than usual.  Fleas? No. Ticks. No. Allergies? Yes.

Which Breed Is Best For Your Family?

The kids have been asking. You and the spouse have been thinking about it. There have been several family discussions surrounding the topic. You're on the verge of saying, "Yes!  Let's do it!"  However, you have no idea which breed of dog would be best suited for your family.

You're not alone. There are an abundance of dog breeds out there and choosing the right one can often be challenging. Do you want a small dog?  Big dog? Do you want an active dog to pair with your family's active lifestyle? Would a less active dog be a better fit?

People Foods That Are Good For Dogs

A picture speaks a thousand words.  How many times have you sat on the sofa with a snack or at the table to enjoy a home cooked meal and...

Wait for it...

There's your furbaby mashed up against your leg or doing something to let YOU know he's right there.  It happens almost each and every time.  The glare. That sweet face. Maybe a tiny lick on your hand or leg.  How can you resist giving your beloved furbaby a taste of whatever it is your eating, right?

Wash Your Hands After Handling Dog Treats

Yesterday an announcement was made that Joey's Jerky Brand Chicken Jerky dog treats were being pulled off the shelf voluntarily.  These treats made by Kritter's Kitchen Kreations of Loudon are locally made in New Hampshire.  They're not sold in supermarkets or large pet retailers.  You'll more than likely find these treats in smaller retailers like family owned stores and Agway.

Over 20 folks were diagnosed with the same strain of salmonella.  It's still under investigation whether these treats are responsible for the outbreak however, the finger is pointing in their direction.  All of the folks who fell sick had purchased these chicken jerky treats.

Make Your Own Filling For Dog Bones

Dogs and bones are a match made in heaven. When you add a tasty filling, it takes a bone to over the top delicious.  My dog goes crazy for these filled bones.  I allow him to have 2 a week.  He has mastered the process of removing the filling within a short period of time.  After it's licked clean, he takes it to his bone stashing site for future chew fixes.

How To Decode Your Dog's Body Language

You accidentally wake up late for work.  On the way to the bathroom you trip over something that's not supposed to be on the floor.  There's no time to make coffee at home so you make a pit stop on the way to work for your java fix.  As you're backing into your parking spot, the coffee spills.  You realize you forgot your lunch.  You rush into work, settle in and proceed with your work day.

Delicious Apple Crunch Pupcakes

Just a heads up, we are huge fans of homemade dog treats. Although there are high quality, all natural dog treats out on the market to purchase, they often come with a hefty price tag.  If you give your furkid treats daily this can add up especially if you're buying for more than one.

Homemade dog treats are super easy to make.  Our motto is if you can bake up a batch of cookies or muffins, you can make dog treats.  The biggest benefit is you control the ingredients.  You don't have to worry about questionable additives or preservatives.  The other benefit is the cost. Making your own dog treats will cost you much less...as in 70%-90% less than what you would pay at the store.

Cleaning Up After An Accident

If you have a dog, at one point you'll have to deal with occasional accidents.  It happens whether it's health reasons, anxiety, getting excited or you have a new puppy.

Knowing how to clean up after an accident is important for several reasons.  The obvious is for sanitation reasons.  Second, immediate and thorough cleanup will prevent odors from spreading.  If you've ever "missed" cleaning up an accident because you didn't catch it on time, you know what I'm talking about.

Homemade Gourmet Dog Treats

A few years ago I visited a dog boutique while on a weekend getaway.  It was a small shop that catered to everything and anything dogs.  From designer inspired apparel to faux gem encrusted leashes, they had it. This shop even had a tiny gourmet bakery section. A clear bag of gourmet dipped biscuits tied neatly with a bow caught my eye.

Dogs Are Smart Like That

As they say, where there's a will, there's a way.  Dogs are smart like that and they certainly love the comfort of a sofa.  Think about it...when you watch TV, lounge out or sneak a nap in the living room area, is it done on the floor or sofa?  Exactly!  Your beloved pooch has the same sort of mind frame.
