Paw Lickin' Good Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Treats

Some of y'all carve pumpkins. Others wait until after Halloween to gut out the seeds to roast. There's a handful of folks (Ohhhh Leeeee-Saaaaaaa) who uses the entire pumpkin. This involves roasting halved pumpkins until soft and making homemade pumpkin puree.

Aside from making a winter's worth of pumpkin bread and muffins, there's the lingering question of "what else is there to do with all the pumpkin?"  Did you know pumpkin is a common ingredient in all natural dog treats? Dogs love the flavor and it's super healthy to incorporate into homemade dog treats.

We've Been Hard At Work Setting Up Shop!

Take Dog Photos Like A Pro

Getting a great picture of our furbabies is often a challenge to say the very least. Once the camera comes out, they get a case of the zoomies or won't sit still for any length of time. We've been known to get down on our hands and knees (or tummy) to get that perfect pic. And, there's always the tried and true method of treat bribery...although that's touch and go.

Reiki For Pets

Yesterday, we gave a warm welcome to the newest addition to our K9 1-ON-1 family, Sharon Cooper. She was kind enough to pass along some valuable information on Reiki For Pets so we could share it with you.

Reiki is a hands-on healing method that originated in Japan.  The practitioner channels healing energy through their hands to the animal through a light touch either directly on the body or from a distance.  The word Reiki (pronounced "ray-key") is a Japanese composite word usually translated as "universal life energy".

It is based on the idea that all living beings have life energy flowing through them. When life energy is high, your pets are healthy and balanced, more relaxed and less likely to get sick. When it is low, they'll often be more easily affected by stress and less resistant to illness. Reiki is a safe complement to conventional Western medicine, Chinese medicine, herbal medicine, homeopathy and all other forms of healing.

A Warm Welcome To Sharon Cooper

Let's give the newest addition to the K9 1-ON-1 family a warm welcome!

A little about Sharon...

" I have been practicing Yoga for 15 years, and teaching for 9. I obtained my Advanced Reiki certification in April 2013 and I am scheduled to graduate from Massage Therapy school in December 2013. After spending over 30 years in the restaurant business, I decided it was time to follow my heart and the path towards holistic care for both people and animals alike. With a compassionate heart, I look forward to working with each individual, to bring balance back to the body, mind and spirit.

Holiday Plants That Are Toxic For Dogs

It's hard to believe we're halfway through October already!  Most stores have their Halloween merchandise on sale and the shelves are fully stocked with Christmas decorations, ornaments, stockings, inflatables and...Christmas trees.

There seems to be a great divide separating the people who cringe at the mere site of Christmas stuff and those who are already stringing up lights.  Whether you started the process a week ago or you're one that waits until the day after Thanksgiving...there is common ground among pet parents.

DIY First Aid Kits For Pets

Last year I needed a new First Aid Kit. I searched several stores and was shocked by the price!  Like with a lot of things...attached to the word "convenience" comes a hefty price tag. Sure, I could have opted for the smaller versions however, I wasn't going to waste my money on a few generic bandages and Q-Tips. I made my own.  In addition to saving over 50%, the one I created was bigger, better and properly stocked to the brim.

Adopting A Puppy?

This was too adorable not to pass on.  If you've every had a puppy in the house, you are probably all too familiar with a few chewed shoes, tiny puddles, sleep deprivation, loads of cuteness, etc.  Of course, you can't forget the constant charging of the camera because there's an endless amount of photos to take.

Rawhide Bones...Yay Or Nay

Last week, during a conversation with friends (and proud pet parents), the topic of rawhide bones came up. I had asked if they gave their furbaby rawhide.  Their answer was a quick and firm no. In late spring of this year, their furbaby became sick on the overnight with blood speckled vomit and melena.  After an emergency visit to the veterinarian, tests, x-rays, medicine and fluid treatment, it was determined there was a mild blockage in the intestine.

The next 24 hours were critical. If the blockage didn't pass or the symptoms progressed, their furbaby would require surgery.  As each hour passed, things improved. The vomiting ceased, the melena passed, his appetite returned and it appeared he was on the road to recovery.  Within 72 hours, he had made a full recovery.

Dog Shaming At Its Best...

Day after day we search for photos, interesting articles, funny memes and other dog related stuff to post on our site and the K9 1-ON-1 Facebook wall.  Lately, we've been noticing the rise in popularity with dog shaming. We'll admit, most of 'em give us a good chuckle. As pet parents, we recognize that our furkids have their own unique personality.  With that, comes a little mischief at times.

Operation Special Delivery

This story restores our faith in humanity...and it required a few Kleenex.  Imagine 400 dogs rescued from high kill animal shelters in Georgia and flown to the east coast. Some of these sweep pups were just hours away from being euthanized.

"Pilots N Paws volunteers donated their time, gas money and their planes to pick up the shelter animals on Saturday and give them a second chance at life..."

This DIY Tugga Toy Is Made From Old T-Shirts

We've talked a lot about the high cost of gourmet dog treats, dog beds and other novelty gift items. What about toys?  Finding reasonably priced toys isn't that difficult. You'll find dog toys ranging anywhere from $1 to $50 or more. As with most things, it all depends where you shop and the brand you opt for.

DIY Holiday Gifts For Dogs

We know. We're only into the first week of October and when the "C" or "H" words are mentioned, people tend to shudder.  Christmas. Holiday. It's early, however, there is evidence people are already stocking up for the season. White chocolate chips have disappeared from the shelves. Holiday treat bags are picked over at retailer locations that have put them out early. Plain white mugs are hard to find. Etc.

With that being said, we thought it was the perfect time to bring up gift ideas for dogs. We have a lot of friends who are pet parents and we're not the type to forget their furbaby during the Holiday season. Over the past few years, the availability of pet gifts have soared through the roof.  There's everything from prepackaged holiday dog cookies to Christmas stockings filled with treats and toys.

A Few Things You May Not Have Known About Dogs

There's a lot of work that goes into finding interesting stuff to write about, tweet on our Twitter account and post on our Facebook page. We're always searching for funny memes, helpful articles for pet parents, homemade dog treats, DIY projects and other interesting tidbits.

The other day we came across something cool that caught our attention and it's rather interesting.  Did you know that dogs have been domesticated for over 30,000 years yet they still gravitate towards primal instincts like howling at the moon and territory marking?  Or that, despite misconceptions, dog actually see in color?
