Staying fit during the coldest months of the year isn't just a human
problem—it's one pets deal with too. A study by the Association for Pet
Obesity Prevention (APOP) found that dogs and cats gain an average of
0.3 and 0.37 pounds, respectively (the equivalent of 1.5 to 4 pounds for
people), between October and February. Read on
for three major causes behind bulking up and advice on how to combat
them from Deborah Linder, D.V.M., lead faculty for the Tufts Obesity
Clinic for Animals.

Pet Charities: How You Can Help an Animal in Need
With hundreds of worthy pet organizations that could use your help,
it can be tempting to just give to the last one that ran a
heart-wrenching commercial. But with a little research, you can reward a
group that you truly find meaningful. "Pick a charity that reflects
your values and delivers on promises," says Carri Harte of
Maguire/Maguire, an association management firm that screens groups for
the nonprofit Animal Charities of America. Harte offers her tips on finding a pet-friendly foundation.

The Putnam Lions Memiroal Dog Park is open.
Saturday was a wonderful day for K9 1-ON-1. We were on hand for the Putnam Dog Park locks to come off and be open to the public. When we were sitting with one of the many puppies that came by today Keith and I (jessy) were watching Stu, Lesley and Amy Neal and a smile came over our face. Here is a family that has made this dog park a major part of their lives for a long time and not for their own selfish needs but for the good of the dogs and families of our towns. A big thank you the Neal family and to everyone else involved. We may not know you personally but it took a lot of people to pull this all together.

Best Leashes for Your Pet
Dogs Less Than 40 Pounds
Type: 5/8- or 3/4-inch-wide nylon leash
Why? A simple strand in a sturdy fabric won't weigh down your pet's head or strain his neck or back.
Handling tip: Consider the clasp. Thinner straps might be lightweight enough, but the hook at the end could be too heavy for your canine to wear comfortably. Make sure it's in proportion to the overall leash since some brands keep the same closure dimensions, regardless of the fabric's width. If your four-legged friend weighs less than 5 pounds, cat leashes -- with their smaller scale and lighter feel -- can be used to prevent stress, says Teoti Anderson, owner of Pawsitive Results and author of Puppy Care & Training (TFH Publications).

Summer Pet Pitfalls: Keep Your Pets Safe (By Patti Greco)
We hope you find this information helpful
DrowningPets that love splashing around in water require vigilant supervision. Some dogs will overexert themselves and then not have the strength to get out of the water. Also, consider your dog's health and age: An overweight or older animal may have more trouble swimming than he had in his fitter, younger days.
Cause for concern: If you see your pet struggling to stay afloat, hook his collar with a pole or provide a raft he can crawl onto and pull him to safety. If he's not breathing, administer CPR.
To keep your pet safe: Animals should never be left alone in or near water. If you take your pet swimming or on a boat ride, suit him with a life jacket and let him play in the water for just a few minutes at a time.
