Make Your Own Filling For Dog Bones

Dogs and bones are a match made in heaven. When you add a tasty filling, it takes a bone to over the top delicious.  My dog goes crazy for these filled bones.  I allow him to have 2 a week.  He has mastered the process of removing the filling within a short period of time.  After it's licked clean, he takes it to his bone stashing site for future chew fixes.

I'm all for spoiling my furbaby with gourmet treats and bones however, sometimes the price tags on these items can easily be classified as highway robbery. Most dog owners can agree these treats can add up quickly with their hefty price tags.  One small stuffed bone costs between $4.99 - $5.99.  It depends which retailer I purchase from at the time.

As a fan of homemade dog treats and gourmet snacks, I'm always looking for ways to duplicate these tasty treats. You can bet I've been brainstorming ideas on how to make my own stuffing.  There are products already out on the market to stuff bones with.  You've probably seen them.  They look almost identical to a can of Cheez Whiz with a $7 - $8 price tag attached.  No thank you.

I finally had a little free time and decided to give it a whirl.  I took a few of his favorite soft dog treats and gave 'em a few whirls in the food processor.  I opted for a rice like consistency.  I poured the granulated dog treats into a small bowl and mixed with just enough all natural peanut butter to achieve a tight filling.  I stuffed one of his empty bones and it was love at first taste.

There isn't an exact recipe for this as dog treats vary in size. I plan on experimenting with other flavors and consistencies including smooth versus chunky, adding a little wheat flour to bind the mixture up more and creating a tasty recipe for a cheese stuffing.  I'll keep you posted on the results.

What do you stuff your dog bones with?

  2. I am really looking for something I can fill these bones with after washing and then back into it similar to how they come from the stores anyone????

    1. I chopped about 2 cups of dog food and 1/2 cup of oatmeal in my food processor until it was about pea sized, then I added about 3/4 cup of peanut butter and mixed until it was moist and firm. I stood the bone on it's end and used a dowel to pack the mixture into the bone. It was very easy to fill this way and ended up looking like I just bought it from the store.

  3. For everyone using peanut butter, make sure it is natural peanut butter as regular store bought is harmful to your dog's. The reason for this is that it contains Xylitol which is a sugar substitute and toxic to your dog's.

  4. I bought peanut butter specifically made for dogs. Its a bit runny but I put it in the refrigerator to get it too the right consistency. That way, its perfect for mixing up with other ingredients.
